2025 / France / Documentary / 32′

Directed by Hassen Ferhani

Synopsis

June 2025. Hassen Ferhani is participating in an artist-in-residence program at the Marseille prison to create a documentary work with a group of male inmates, based on a simple idea: to transform the enclosed space of the Baumettes Prison’s Image and Movement Studio into a photography studio. “I’m going in with an open mind and two points of reference: Johan Van der Keuken’s To Sang Fotostudio and Roland Barthes’s La Chambre Claire.”

Biography

A director and cinematographer, Hassen Ferhani was born in Algiers and developed his passion at the Chrysalide film club. Since Les Baies d’Alger in 2006, the director has developed a distinctive approach -a blend of reality and fiction- which he fully realized in two multi-award-winning feature-length documentaries: Dans ma tête un rond-point (2015) and 143 rue du Désert (2019).
